1.4m Lagosians travel by water monthly

THERE are indications that more Lagosians now travel by water as the  rider-ship survey of the Lagos State Waterways Authority (LASWA) has shown that over  1.400,000  people in the state move back and forth by water.

LASWA’s Director of operations Engr Segun Adekoya stated that the projection in the five years  is to increase the number to five million every month.

Adekoya said that as the number of the rider ship survey increases, the agency is also working round the clock to expand facilities that will enhance both the user and providers of ferry services.

He disclosed that the agency on the directive of the government has commenced massively rehabilitation, reconstruction of some major jetties across the state.

Besides, LASWA has also concluded plans to begun lightening up the waterways so that commuters also travel at night.
Adekoya explained that the move to encourage the use of the waterways as a mode of transportation is part of the on going integrated transport system  being promoted by the state government.

He however warned both commuters and boat operators to ensure that every safety rules and regulation governing the use of the waterways is strictly adhered to as any breach will be met equal sanction.

As at the time of filling this report, there are over eighteen ferry operators currently providing such service in the state.
