At least one student was killed and 22 others were injured after lightning struck a secondary school in Tanzania’s southern region of Mtwara, authorities said on Wednesday.

Evod Mmanda, Mtwara district commissioner, said the lightning struck Mikindani Secondary School on Tuesday, killing one student.

“Two out of the 22 injured students were treated and discharged but 20 of them are still in hospital,” Mmanda told a news conference.

The official said two of the injured students admitted to Ligula regional government hospital were in serious condition.

Elizabeth Moses, Mikindani Secondary School Headmistress, said the lightning struck Form III classroom where most of the students were affected.

“After a few minutes another lightning hit on Form V classroom, leaving the students screaming and running to all directions,” said the headmistress.

“Following the two lightning teachers started to offer first aid,” added Moses. Enditem
