The three-day meeting has brought together experts and researchers to discuss policies aimed at eliminating poverty and fighting inequalities in Africa.

The annual conference is organized by the African Development Bank, the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) and the UN Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA).

“I urge you to come up with simple, clear and easy recommendations to be implemented for the benefit of our people,” DR Congo’s Senate Speaker Leon Kengo Wa Dondo said at the opening of the forum.

“Africa has made significant progress but inequalities persist,” UNECA Executive Secretary Carlos Lopez said, adding that “Africa was celebrating performance but not results since the current growth was not having any positive impact on ordinary Africans.”

“Economic growth without wealth redistribution will not end poverty and cannot guarantee sustainable development. The rising tide should ensure all ships are floating,” said Abdoulaye Mar Dieye, Director of UNDP Africa Bureau.

“This means that we must place emphasis on ending income inequalities, empowerment of women, reduction of discrepancies in provision of health, nutrition and education as well as end marginalization,” Dieye said. Enditem
