At least 15 people were killed and 36 others injured after a gasoline tanker exploded in central Liberia’s Bong County on Tuesday, Liberian police have said.

The tanker lost control and veered off the road before falling into a ditch in the Totota area of Bong on Tuesday, Prince B. Mulbah, a deputy inspector general of the Liberia National Police, told reporters.

“For now, we hold the number of deaths at 15,” Mulbah said Tuesday while noting “there were lots of people that got burned.”

Cynthia Blapooh, the Bong County health officer, told the media that a total of “36 critically ill patients,” including women and children, were receiving treatment at a local hospital in the county following the incident.
