Cholera has killed two and left seven others hospitalized in Bakassi Peninsula, Cameroon’s local health officials said on Tuesday.

All measures have been taken to avoid further spread of the disease, according to officials who estimated the disease has been caused by failure to abide by hygienic regulations.

It is the first time cases of cholera have been reported in the oil-rich area that is inhabited by over 200,000 people.

Cholera spreads through contaminated food and drinking water, causing diarrhea, nausea and vomiting. There is high risk of cholera mainly in Cameroon’s Far North region, but cases have also been reported in commercial capital, Douala. Enditem
