200 STMA branded dustbins presented to Juaboso District

About 200 dustbins branded with the abbreviations of the Sekondi-Takoradi Metropolitan Assembly (STMA) meant to manage waste in the Metropolis have been diverted to the Juaboso District in the Western Region.

The move had angered some residents in the Metropolis who argued that most households and shop owners were in dire need of the waste-bins and wondered the motive behind the diversion of the bins.

Some traders at the Central Business District of Takoradi told the Ghana News Agency that the huge refuse containers positioned at some vantage points of the Takoradi Market Circle were not enough and the dustbins were needed to manage their waste.

This situation, according to them, often created insanitary conditions at the market and posed health risks to them.

Mr Mark Cudjoe, an Assembly Member for Fijai Electoral Area, also expressed surprise at the allegations saying he had lobbied for dustbins for some schools in his electoral area but this had proved futile.

However, Mr Duni Bom, the Head of Waste Management at the STMA, could not confirm the authenticity of the issue but promised to institute investigations into the matter.

Meanwhile, Mr Kingsley Asoa-Apima, the District Chief Executive for Juaboso, has confirmed to the GNA that some dustbins embossed with STMA abbreviation were currently at the premises of the Assembly.

He explained that it was Zoomlion Waste Management Company that brought them and that the bins were initially sent to the STMA.

He said the STMA had received sufficient waste-bins from Zoomlion for waste management, they decided to distribute the excess dustbins to Juaboso and other districts in the Region that needed them.
