2016 innovative talk programme held

TEDx Accra as part of the independent international TED talk platform, which allows innovators, thinkers and social entrepreneurs to share ideas on changing the world has held its 2016 innovative talk programme for the youth.

The five- day programme which ended in Accra had many professionals like Anas Aremeyaw Anas, an investigative journalist, Kwaku Sintim Misa, a television presenter, Mrs Lucy Quist, Managing Director of Airtel Ghana, and other innovative speakers deliver at the event.

Mrs Dzifah Abla Gomashie, Deputy Minister of Tourism, Culture and Creative Arts making an opening remark said Ghanaians have a responsibility of promoting the country, adding: “As a Ministry of Tourism, we have taken the opportunity to promote the Ghanaian culture and tradition in media, arts and tradition.”

Mr Abeiku Aggrey Santana, a radio presenter speaking on the use of social media said some people are scared to be on social media because of insults and criticisms from other users on the platform.

He said some are also reluctant about using it because they feel too big for the platform.

However, Mr Santana said it is sometimes important that a person establishes contact with people and make good use of the platform especially on a platform like linked in where professionals meet and interact for life improvement.

“We need to rethink our purpose for being on social media, “he said.

Justice Julia Sarkodie-Mensah, a High Court Judge in Botswana making a presentation on rethinking law and the justice system said justice delayed is justice denied therefore it is necessary that Ghanaians rethink the criminal justice system.

“We must do what the 21st century does by employing technology such as taking videos to provide evidence to court cases, which also helps to reduce cost and promotes speed in dealing with cases.

“Therefore cases in other parts of the country can be dealt with easily by sending evidence electronically,” she said.

She said the nation must institutionalise research and get ministries of Gender, Attorney General on board to get data from Prisons that could help reduce crime rates.

“Let’s think about restorative justices. I think we should not build more prisons even though our prisons are full. Let’s use our state resources to create programmes to rehabilitate criminals and make their lives more meaningful,” she said.

Justice Sarkodie-Mensah said the nation’s law schools our law schools should have their curricula improved to fit the 21st century and modernising our criminal justice system is a key development to every nation’s development.

She said the state should make the justice system more efficient such that corruption on the part of the judge is not an alternative.

She said the public must know that he who gives the judge a bribe is also guilty.

Nana Ama Botchway-Dowuona, a legal practitioner said the citizenry needs to rethink their attitude towards the law if they want to rethink the law.

She said a report released by the world justice report disclosed that Ghana was 34th out of 102 countries that are doing well with their legal system.

She noted that the report covered a wide scope including civil justice and criminal justice, adding that Ghana becoming the second best law practising country in Sub Saharan Africa, with six out of 10 points indicated that the legal system in Ghana is developing.

Mr John Awuah, the Chief Executive Officer of Universal Merchant Bank, making a presentation on career development advised the youth not to forget that the decisions they make now becomes a complete reflection of what they will become tomorrow.

“You need to be prepared to relaunch yourself when you hit and get messed up alone the line”, he said.

Mr Frederick Amissah, Country Director of Herbalife International said in order to build a good name, one need to be trusted, be competitive and make positive friends.

He said in career development, a person needs to create a good name with values to make a better brand.

“You also need to have a vision with passion that will become part of you every day and with consistency, you can achieve all your goals,” he said.
