The two car crashes took place in central Kogi state and southern Delta state.

accidentOgochukwu Ugboma, a commander with the road commission in Kogi, told Xinhua that 18 people lost their lives in an accident which occurred on Abuja-Lokoja road in the early hours of Friday.

He added 56 others, including a female child, sustained injuries.

In oil-rich Delta, nine people died when the bus in which they were travelling collided with a truck laden with cement in Asaba, the state capital.

Rindom Kumven, a commander with the road commission in Delta, told Xinhua the truck belonged to Dangote Group and was speeding.

Road officials attributed the accidents to speeding and dangerous driving.

Traffic accidents are common in Nigeria, Africa’s most populous country, due to poorly maintained roads and a common disregard for traffic laws.

More than 1,000 are killed on the road each year in the country. Enditem
