A 28-year-old taxi driver, Evans Oppong, based at Dormaa-Ahenkro in the Dormaa Central Municipality of the Brong-Ahafo Region on Sunday died instantly in a road crash at Mantukwa on the Sunyani-Berekum road.
Police Superintendent Stella Sedame, the Regional Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) Commander, confirmed to the Ghana News Agency in Sunyani, saying the accident happened at about 19:00 hours.
“The body of the deceased has been deposited at the Sunyani Regional Hospital mortuary for autopsy while passengers who sustained various degrees of injuries and were admitted at the Hospital are also responding to treatment,” she added.
P/Supt Sedame explained that Oppong was driving a Kia Picanto taxi with registration number BA 1239-16 from Berekum towards Sunyani with six passengers on board and had a head on collusion with a Toyota Rav4 vehicle which was from Sunyani to Berekum.
She said upon reaching Mantukwa junction near the ‘Best Care’ private mortuary in the Sunyani West District, the fan belt of the taxi cab got torn and made the steering wheel very difficult to control, adding that it therefore veered off to the opposite lane and crushed into the Toyota vehicle which was on a very top speed.
P/Supt Sedame said both vehicles fell on the sideways and the taxi driver died on the spot while the Toyota driver and the other passengers sustained injuries.
“Some residence of Mantukwa rushed to the scene and inform the Police who arrived in time to assist in sending victims to the Hospital,”.
