At least three people were killed by ongoing heavy rains and one injured in Tanzania’s northern district of Serengeti in Mara region, an official said on Thursday.
Ally Nyarobi, Isenye ward councilor in Serengeti district, said heavy rainfall on Wednesday night led to the falling down of a house in the ward killing two children aged 4 and 10.
Nyarobi said a motorcyclist drowned in the same night when he tried to cross an overflowing river.
He said the house in which the two children were sheltered collapsed at around 9:30 pm on Christmas day following heavy rain that lasted for hours.
Nyarobi said the motorcyclist was swept away by raging waters after he had tried to cross the river whose bridge had collapsed.
Last week Tanzania’s weather watchdog warned of impending heavy rains to hit 13 regions in four consecutive days.
Tanzania Meteorological Agency said the rains were expected to cause destruction on the infrastructure and property. Enditem
