At least three people were killed and seven others injured after a truck and bus collided in Nigeria’s southwest region Saturday, traffic police said Sunday.

The accident, which occurred along the Lagos-Ibadan expressway, which goes through the southwestern states of Oyo, Ogun, and Lagos, was caused by loss of control due to speeding, said Florence Okpe, a spokesperson for the Federal Road Safety Corps in Ogun, in a statement.

“Three people died on the spot, and the injured were rushed to a nearby hospital,” Okpe said, noting the accident was caused by speeding which led to loss of control on the part of the driver of the bus.

The traffic police authority has urged motorists to consider the high vehicular movement due to the Christmas season, and poor visibility due to weather conditions, she added.

Deadly road accidents are frequently reported in Nigeria, often caused by overloading, bad road conditions, and reckless driving.
