At least three people were killed and more than 12 others injured after a building collapsed in Mumbai Thursday, a senior police official said.

“The incident took place in Mumbai’s Maharashtra Nagar area in the morning. While three bodies have been recovered so far, those injured were rushed to a hospital,” he said on condition of anonymity.

Local TV channels showed footage of firemen carrying out rescue work and trying to look through the debris for anyone trapped inside.

“A probe has been ordered into the incident though it seems to be the fault of the builder,” the official said.

Building collapses are common in India, mainly because of poor construction practices triggered by demand for low-cost housing particularly among the country’s growing middle-class. Enditem
