3 Persons Remanded For Stealing

The Winneba District Court has remanded three persons into police custody for conspiring to commit crime and stealing items at the low cost community in Winneba.

Godwin Ameka a.k.a Kobina,33, a driver, Prince Owusu, an apprentice and Kwaku Kanjanga, a 29 year old phone dealer all residents of old Fadama in Accra.

Their pleas were not taken and are to re-appear before the court on 30th October, 2017,

An accomplice Agyenkwa a.k.a Rasta also resides at Fadama is now at large.

Narrating the facts to the court presided over by Isaac Ohene Kufour, Police Inspector Peter Agbelie said, the complainant in the case is Richard Bampoe-Addo a teacher who lives at Low Cost.

He said on 6th October, 2017, Ameka, Agyenkwa and Owusu on board a Taxi cab with registration number GW 6793-13 arrived at Winneba in the afternoon and drove to the complainant house in his absence.

They damaged the door and locks to the house, entered a room and made away two suit cases containing two Sewn kente clothes, two other kente cloth, silk cloth, two lace cloth, other items include one Samsung tablet, one Toshiba laptop, a 22inches Luxor flat screen TV all valued at 8,250.00 and cash of 1,400.00 Ghana Cedis.

The prosecution said in an attempt to flee the scene with the items the taxi develop a mechanical fault and Ameka and Agyenkwa managed to towed the taxi to a nearby fitting shop and left for Accra with the intention to purchase the damaged parts to repair the
car.

The prosecution said on 7th October, 2017 Ameka return to Winneba with the parts but had information that the car has been impounded by the Winneba Police, he become suspicious and fled to Accra to inform a witness in the case that the taxi developed mechanical fault of which they parked it on a road somewhere but later had information that the Winneba Police have towed it to their Station.

The witnesses came to Winneba police station to enquire about the said taxi but he was arrested and in his cautioned statement he stated that he gave the taxi to Ameka as spare driver.

The prosecution said further that on 18th October, 2017 the police got information that Ameka and Owusu have been arrested by Kwabenya police on a similar offence.

On October 19, 2017 Police personnel from Winneba proceeded to Kwabenya Police station and re-arrested the suspects and brought them to Winneba.

In their respective cautioned statements they admitted having committed the crime with Agyenkwa now at large and later led the Police to arrest Kanjanga who bought the items, and retrieved a Samsung Tablet and Dell Laptop from him.

Later in an interview the Ghana News Agency, ASP Rev. John Agbemabiese Winneba District Police crime officer said, fighting crime is not the responsibility of the police alone saying society owe it a duty to assist them in their fight against crime by volunteering accurate and credible information timely that would lead to early detection of crimes.
