A total of 31 gunmen were killed by Nigerian troops in various operations in the country’s northern region in the past week, an official said Sunday.

Edward Buba, the spokesman for the military, said in a statement that 81 others were also arrested by the troops.

The troops freed at least 10 people held hostage by the terrorist group, Boko Haram, and the Islamic State’s West Africa Province in the northeastern part of Nigeria, Buba said.

“The military, through its operations, continues to prevail against the effects of insurgency and terrorism with an ultimate goal of securing the country against perpetrators of insecurity for national progress,” the official added.

Armed attacks have been a primary security threat in Nigeria’s northern and central regions, leading to deaths and kidnappings in recent months.
