At least 33 people were killed and 156 others sustained serious injuries in road accidents in Uganda during the Christmas season, police said Wednesday.
Michael Kananura, public relations officer of the Directorate of Traffic and Road Safety, said in a statement that during the Dec. 24-25 period, among the fatalities registered, pedestrians and riders constituted 85 percent, most being in the rural part of the country.
“During this season, we registered fewer road crashes compared to last season because of the interventions that started much earlier,” he said.
Uganda registers some 20,000 road accidents nationwide each year, causing more than 2,000 deaths, according to police data.
