33 rebels surrender to UN Mission in DR Congo

Thirty-three rebels in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DR Congo) surrendered to the UN Mission for Stabilization of Congo (MONUSCO) on Monday, in an ongoing voluntary disarmament program in North Kivu province.

The fighters of the Ituri Patriotic Resistance Front (FRPI), arrived in Goma, the capital of North Kivu, where they were hosted in a transit camp in Munigi before being handed to the Congolese army’s disarmament and demobilization program unit.

In a statement issued on Monday, MONUSCO said there were at least 60 other FRPI fighters awaiting demobilization at the Munigi camp.

FRPI, operating in eastern DR Congo for years, is accused by the UN of committing serious human rights violations. Enditem
