34 policemen killed in Burundi’s insurgency since April

At least 34 policemen were killed and 293 others wounded during the insurgency since April in Burundi, the Burundian security minister said here Monday.


“During the insurgency that started in April, we lost 34 police agents and 293 others were injured and eight among them have become completely disabled,” said Burundian Public Security Alain Guillaume Bunyoni.

Burundi According to him, security forces successfully ensured security during the whole electoral process that was concluded in August amid protests.

“Despite insurgents’ security threats characterized by illegal demonstrations to disrupt elections and to overthrow institutions legally established, the national police managed and controlled the protests with professionalism, loyalty and self-sacrifice,” said Bunyoni.

The protests caused significant losses as two police departments were attacked by insurgents on May 13, the day of the coup plot that was later foiled. Enditem
