At least four people have been killed and about 20 others injured in clashes between rival ethnic communities in Cameroon’s Far North region, said local sources Tuesday.

Mohaman Ibrahim Awal, sub-prefect of the Kai-Kai subdivision in the Mayo-Danay division of the region, said that the conflict erupted Monday over a land dispute involving the villages of Doreissou, Dama, Djafga, and Gongolom.

According to Awal, two villagers were killed on the spot while two others succumbed to their injuries in the hospital.

Local media outlets reported that calm had been restored to the affected villages following the deployment of soldiers aimed at restoring peace and stability.

Deadly conflicts over land are recurrent in Cameroon’s Far North region.
