Otumfuo Osei Tutu II-Asantehene

Otumfuo Osei Tutu II will host the 4th Annual Teachers Awards at the Manhyia Palace on May 2, 2014. The Otumfuo Osei Tutu II Teachers Awards is an event organized by the Otumfuo Charity Foundation and sponsored annually by Asantehene, corporate and individual donors to recognize and honor outstanding teachers in deprived communities across Ghana. The Annual Teachers Awards is in line with Otumfuo Osei Tutu II?s belief that Ghana must honor teachers and other professionals who constant ly sacrifice the pleasure of living in urban communities to serve in deprived and rural communities. Otumfuo has long held the view that if there is any group in Ghana worthy of recognition and reward, it should be teachers in deprived communities.

Recent research conducted by the Ghana Ministry of Education revealed that there were more teachers available than required in the urban and peri-urban communities in Ghana, noting that less privileged and rural communities had inadequate teachers. Inadequate teacher motivation, poor infrastructure, inadequate residential accommodation for teachers, inadequate furniture for pupils and teachers, inadequate means of transportation and inadequate health facilities were some of the contributing factors.

Noting the above, the Otumfuo Osei Tutu II Teachers Awards is in line with recognizing the need to motivate and inspire teachers who remain committed to their work in these deprived communities in spite of challenges. Mr. Ben Boaitey, a board member of the Otumfuo Osei Tutu?II Charity Foundation noted that ?Otumfuo is very passionate about educating Ghanaian?children. The Asantehene recognizes that teachers possess tremendous power in shaping the lives?of school children. Therefore, teachers must be constantly motivated and rewarded to be instruments of inspiration to our children?. Dr. Thomas Agyarko-Poku, the Executive Chairman of the Otumfuo Charity Foundation also noted that ?these teachers sacrifice and work tirelessly to make a difference in the lives of children in deprived communities. Teachers are responsible for igniting a lifelong curiosity and passion for learning in their pupils. Therefore, honoring them was the right thing to do?.
