Officers from the Zambia Police and Immigration Department arrested the five men in Lusaka, the country’s capital following increased reports where foreigners have been threatened with arrest by the culprits.
Charity Munganga-Chanda, Zambia Police Spokesperson told Xinhua in a statement that the culprits have been threatening foreigners by asking for their immigration documentation and extorting money from them.
The officers, she said, found a pair of handcuffs, police beacon, a uniform worn by immigration officers as well as identification cards belonging to the police and the Immigration department which the suspects were using.
“Apart from the above stated offenses, the suspects threatened the victims with false imprisonment to the extent of driving them near police stations or prisons so as to instill fear in them and force them to give in to their demands,” she said.
“These are not by any means isolated incidents. A number of robberies, kidnappings and extortions in the same manner have taken place in Lusaka in the past few months,” she added.
The security agencies have since warned foreigners to be wary of conmen masquerading as law enforcement officers. Enditem
