The overall death toll of the Ukrainian conflict has risen above 5,000, with an average of 29 people per day killed in intense fighting over the past days, the UN human rights office says.

“This has been the most deadly period since the declaration of a ceasefire on 5 September,” the office’s spokesman Rupert Colville says.

He adds that the overall figure is a conservative estimate and that the real number of people killed since April last year may be much higher.
