South African police on Friday said they found seven bodies with gunshot wounds dumped near a highway in Johannesburg.

“The bodies were discovered late last night with bullet wounds and one body had burnt wounds,” police spokesperson Noxolo Kweza said. “At this stage, it is not clear what happened.

It is suspected that the males might have been killed underground and might be part of the ongoing illegal mining activities.”

The victims, all males aged between 30 and 40 years, have yet to be identified, Kweza said.

Police were alerted by a passer-by who saw the bodies, she said.

There has been fighting between illegal miners in the past. It’s not clear the latest deaths were linked to fighting. Enditem
