7 killed in violent incidents in Burundi’s capital Bujumbura

Seven persons including five criminals, one policeman and one bandit were killed in separate violence incidents on Wednesday morning and Tuesday night, while three policemen were injured, the police spokesman told Xinhua.

“Five criminals were killed today (Wednesday) morning in Cibitoke neighborhood. Those criminals include two who had been released yesterday (Tuesday) among the protesters who had been arrested in April. BurundiThey were killed around 08:00 (06:00 GMT) after they blasted three grenades against police agents on a patrol duty at the 15th Avenue in Cibitoke,”said Burundian Police Spokesman Pierre Nkurikiye.

Nkurikiye indicated that police agents defended themselves because they were attacked by those criminals, adding that a policeman was seriously injured during the grenade attack.

“Those criminals had in their hands unexploded grenades, which means that they were going to blast other grenades against police agents,” said Nkurikiye.

He indicated that another grenade was blasted at the 9th Avenue in the same neighborhood of Cibitoke without making human casualties.

“Two other persons including a policeman and a bandit were killed last (Tuesday) night in a criminals’ attack, in Bwiza neighborhood, against an office of the Municipality of Bujumbura that hosts archives,” said Nkurikiye.

The staff at Bujumbura Mayor’s office confirmed that part of the archives was burned. Enditem
