Nine law enforcement officers have been arrested since the beginning of the festive season, the South African Road Traffic Management Corporation (RMTC) said on Monday.

The RMTC said the latest two were arrested on Sunday in Pretoria while soliciting bribes from motorists.

“This brings the number of people arrested for bribery and corruption to nine since the start of the festive season on Dec. 1,” RMTC spokesperson Simon Zwane said. “Bribery and corruption is a major issue on national roads and contributes to lawlessness that leads to fatal crashes.”

Anti-corruption agents have been deployed on the roads to deal with the situation, he added.

The RMTC also called on the people to report officials asking for bribes. Enditem
