Media personality Abeiku Santana has waded into the heated debate over Ghana’s founders, asserting that Osagyefo Dr Kwame Nkrumah, Ghana’s first president, is not just a national hero but also a pivotal figure in the broader African context.
In a tweet on X, Santana emphasised Nkrumah’s significance beyond Ghana’s borders, stating, “Beyond Ghana, Osagyefo Dr Kwame Nkrumah is a founding Father of Africa!”
The debate was reignited following President Akufo-Addo’s comments on Founder’s Day, April 3, 2024, where he challenged the notion that Nkrumah was the sole founder of Ghana. President Akufo-Addo acknowledged Nkrumah’s vital role but argued that the country’s independence was a collective achievement involving numerous patriots.
In his address, the President remarked, “I speak to you this evening, rejecting entirely the notion that one man founded Ghana.
While Kwame Nkrumah’s contributions to our independence are undeniable, it is essential to acknowledge that the struggle for our nation’s freedom was a collective effort spanning several generations.”
Santana’s comments, shared alongside a video of Nkrumah with other prominent figures at Independence Square, have sparked further discussion.
His stance aligns with other notable personalities, including veteran journalist Kwesi Pratt, historian Anokye, and NDC flagbearer John Mahama, who have also disputed the President’s perspective.
The controversy underscores ongoing debates about recognising Ghana’s and Africa’s historical figures, reflecting a broader discussion on collective and individual contributions to national and continental independence.
