An Accra Circuit Court has remanded Imam Mohammed Lanson Abubakar, a 44-year-old self-proclaimed religious leader, to police custody following allegations that he threatened to kill his estranged wife.

Abubakar, also known as Andre, has pleaded not guilty to the charges but was detained after failing to adhere to a previous police inquiry bail.

Chief Inspector Jonas Lawer informed the court, presided over by Judge Isaac Addo that Abubakar had jumped bail and thus impeded the progress of the investigation.

Concerns were raised that he might not appear for trial if granted bail again. A bench warrant was issued for his arrest on March 27, 2024, after he failed to appear in court. The court has remanded him until September 2, 2024, to assist with the ongoing investigation.

The case involves Maimuna Sarki Abubakar, a social worker and Nigerian citizen residing in the United Kingdom, who is the complainant and Abubakar’s estranged wife.

Chief Inspector Lawer detailed that Abubakar, a businessman and self-styled Imam based in Kumasi, Ashanti Region, had initially met Maimuna via social media. He convinced her to marry him, and the couple wed.

.

During their marriage, Maimuna purchased a plot of land in East Trassaco from Abubakar and built a one-story house she furnished before returning to the UK. When visiting Ghana, she stayed in the property with Abubakar.

In 2020, Abubakar persuaded Maimuna to buy and ship two vehicles—a 2020 Chevrolet Silverado and a 2019 Infiniti CPX—to Ghana, promising to use the proceeds to purchase land in Adjiringanor for her. However, Abubakar used the funds to acquire four plots of land in Adjiringanor instead.

The marriage later deteriorated, and during a dispute, Abubakar allegedly threatened Maimuna, saying, “I have scammed you; I am taking over your building and all your property here in Ghana, including your daughter. If you dare get closer to this property again, I will kill you.”

In response to the charges, Abubakar’s counsel argued for bail, asserting that her client did not flee or make threats as alleged.

She added that Abubakar is a responsible family man with a fixed residence and would be available for trial. The couple is currently seeking a divorce in the Adentan Court.
