Accra is preparing to host the inaugural National Livestock Day on October 3-4, which will feature a vibrant food bazaar and a variety of engaging activities.
The event, which will take place at Efua Sutherland Park, will be themed “A Thriving Livestock Industry Towards Sustainable Food and Nutrition Security for Economic Growth.”
The Ghana National Association of Cattle Farmers (GNACAF), in partnership with the Ministry of Food and Agriculture (MoFA) and the Ministry of National Security, is organizing the celebration.
The event will showcase top livestock products, including exhibitions, panel discussions, and cultural displays.
Mohammed Hardi Tufeiru, Deputy Minister of Food and Agriculture responsible for Livestock, launched the event and highlighted the crucial role of Livestock in rural livelihoods.
He acknowledged the sector’s ongoing challenges, such as disease management, access to quality feed, and inadequate infrastructure, which have impeded growth.
Tufeiru reiterated the government’s dedication to addressing these challenges through collaborations with key stakeholders, including the Ministry of National Security, which has been instrumental in fostering peaceful relations between farmers and herders.
Efforts to promote semi-intensive and intensive livestock farming systems will also be a focus, with the aim of boosting productivity and conserving natural resources.
“The National Livestock Day is designed to uplift farmers from poverty and enhance Ghana’s position in the global livestock market,” Tufeiru stated.
Imam Hanafi Sonde, President of GNACAF, encouraged businesses, organizations, and individuals to support the event.
He noted that the day will be valuable for exchanging knowledge, discussing sector challenges such as farmer/herder conflicts and animal health issues, and exploring sponsorship opportunities.
“The event offers various sponsorship options, and we are open to tailored solutions to meet specific needs,” Sonde added.
Dr. Doris Yaa Osei, Acting Deputy Director of the Centre for Scientific and Industrial Research, affirmed the government’s commitment to working with all stakeholders to achieve national food and nutrition security and to enhance income through sustainable livestock production.
