TWO teenagers got drowned in a ?galamsey? (illegal mining) pit at Akwanseram in the Adansi South District of the Ashanti Region on Tuesday.
The victims were identified as Akwasi Frimpong, 17, and John Adarkwa Ababio, 18 ? both residents of the mining community near New Edubiase.
They got drowned and died subsequently while attempting to pump the water out of the mining pit, having been hired by someone whose identity remains unknown to the police.
They were working with three other youth namely, King Osei, 21, Ibrahim Abukari, 22, and Abu Bonsra, 18, when the incident occurred.
Police at Adansi Awiaso arrested the three youngsters for investigation soon after the incident was reported to them, and the bodies of the victims were later recovered.
The Assemblyman for the area, Stephen Amoako Atta, said the incident happened around 1:00.
He could not tell how the two teenagers got drowned but indicated that that was the subject of investigation by the police.
Carry Mining Company, a small-scale mining firm, was said to have dug the pit during its operations but abandoned the site following a disagreement with the youth of the community.
Stephen Amoako blamed the incident on the negligence of the traditional authority, particularly Nana Ameyaw, the Kontihene of Akwanseram.
