Adabraka Zongo claimed their first Sheikh Sharubutu Ramadan Cup title after defeating defending champions Ashaiman 5-4 on penalties following a tense goalless draw in Sunday’s final.

The victory capped a remarkable tournament run that saw the first-time finalists eliminate three former winners of the prestigious community football competition.

The newly crowned champions demonstrated tactical discipline throughout the knockout stages, securing narrow victories against tournament heavyweights. They edged out hosts Mamobi 1-0 in the quarterfinals before overcoming Kasoa 3-1 on penalties in the semifinals. The final at Accra Sports Stadium, attended by Sports Minister Kofi Adams, remained deadlocked through regulation time before Adabraka held their nerve in the shootout.

Ashaiman, seeking a record fourth title, missed their decisive penalty in the initial shootout sequence, allowing Adabraka to capitalize in sudden death. The defeat marked a disappointing end for the defending champions, who had progressed to the final with convincing wins over Tunga and Nsawam Zongo.

The tournament, now in its tenth edition, honors National Chief Imam Sheikh Osman Nuhu Sharubutu and has grown into one of Ghana’s most competitive grassroots football events. This year’s competition received significant support from Black Stars players Mohammed Kudus and Kamaldeen Sulemana, who sponsored the trophies and medals, while teammate Ernest Nuamah provided match jerseys.

Founder Tamimu Issah praised the tournament’s continued ability to showcase emerging talent and strengthen community ties. The victory establishes Adabraka as a new force in the competition, breaking the dominance of previous winners Ashaiman, Mamobi and Kasoa, who had claimed six of the nine previous titles between them.

The tournament’s growing profile has attracted increasing attention from sports authorities, with organizers anticipating expanded corporate support for future editions. The 2025 competition not only delivered compelling football but also demonstrated the potential of community sports to identify talent outside traditional development structures while promoting social cohesion. As the event continues to grow, it serves as a model for how grassroots tournaments can complement Ghana’s football ecosystem.
