AFCON 2023 ends with victory for Cote d’Ivoire

The curtains fell on Sunday on the 34th edition of the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) which opened on January 13 in Cote d’Ivoire with the award going to the host country for its third time.

Several individual awards were presented before the winner’s trophy. Here are the results and distinctions at the end of the competition which brought together 24 teams.

Podium: Cote d’Ivoire (1st, gold medal), Nigeria (2nd, silver medal), South Africa (3rd, bronze medal)

Best player: William Troost-Ekong (Nigeria)

Top scorer: Emilio Nsue (Equatorial Guinea, 5 goals)

Best goalkeeper: Ronwen William (South Africa)

Best young person: Simon Adingra (Cote d’Ivoire)

Best coach: Emerse Fae (Cote d’Ivoire)

Fair play team: South Africa

In another record, Cote d’Ivoire becomes the first country in history to win the trophy having lost two matches during the group stage and sacking its coach in the middle of the competition.
