The trophy for the 2021 TotalEnergies Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) has arrived in Ghana for a three-day tour.

The trophy tour in Ghana is part of activities by the Confederation of Africa Football (CAF) to whip up interest among participating countries before the tournament commences on January 9, 2022.

The trophy, which arrived from Cote D’ Ivoire was welcomed at the airport by the Deputy Youth and Sports Minister, Mr. Evans Bobie Opoku, Mr. Kurt Okraku President of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), Stephen Appiah former Black Stars Captain and Brand Ambassador of TotalEnergies, Deputy Coach of the Black Stars Maxwell Konadu and other former Black Stars players such as Sam Johnson and Derick Boateng.

Mr. Bobie Opoku said Ghana would soon lay hands on the trophy again after 40 years adding that he was confident Ghana would win the next AFCON.

The trophy, which arrived at the Kotoko International Airport in the early hours of Wednesday, November 17, would make a stop at some selected Total Fuelling Stations like the Total House, Independence Square, Osu Total, Liberation Road (37), and Darkuman Junction Total for the Ghanaian public view and photo session with the public.

Mr. Abdul-Rahim Siddique Head of Marketing Total Ghana said he was confident Ghana would be able to lift the trophy for the first time in four decades.

Appiah stated that lifting the trophy was a legacy for any of the qualified countries and expressed the hope that Black Stars Captain Andre “Dede” Ayew would be the one to get his hands on the trophy come February 6, 2022.

TotalEnergies became partners of the CAF Africa Cup of Nations signed an eight-year deal in 2016 and became the official sponsor of the competition with the tournament renamed Total Africa Cup of Nations in 2017.

The 2021 TotalEnergies AFCON is a tournament between the 24 best African teams, divided into six pools of four teams, with 52 matches to be played in Cameroon.
