Alexander Afenyo-Markin, the Majority Leader in Parliament, has asserted that the New Patriotic Party (NPP) is better positioned to implement transformative policies than its main rival, the National Democratic Congress (NDC).

Speaking in an interview with TV3 on August 18, following the launch of the NPP’s 2024 manifesto in Takoradi, Afenyo-Markin emphasized the party’s track record under the Akufo-Addo administration and its commitment to addressing Ghana’s challenges.

“This manifesto represents the hope for the future of Ghana,” Afenyo-Markin stated, referencing the NPP’s eight years of governance and the new policy directions outlined in the manifesto.

He acknowledged the difficulties faced by Ghanaians but argued that the NPP has been more effective in implementing pro-poor policies than the NDC.

“We know they didn’t perform when they had the opportunity to govern, and there is nothing new they are bringing on board. But we must concede that Ghanaians have faced difficult times, and things are difficult.

However, we are better off implementing transformative policies than our opponents can,” Afenyo-Markin asserted. He urged NPP members and candidates to unite and campaign vigorously to secure the party’s victory in the upcoming elections.

The rallying cry from Afenyo-Markin follows President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo’s appeal for a robust campaign effort. Akufo-Addo called on all NPP members, from grassroots to national leaders, to actively promote the Bawumia-Opoku Prempeh ticket.

He expressed optimism about a favourable election outcome and encouraged party members to work tirelessly to ensure a decisive win.

Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, the NPP’s flagbearer, also addressed the challenging economic conditions that Ghana has faced, including high inflation and rising living costs.

In his speech during the manifesto launch, Bawumia acknowledged the difficulties but highlighted signs of economic recovery, such as a decrease in inflation from over 50% to around 20%.

He reiterated his commitment to addressing ongoing challenges, including high living costs and youth unemployment.

“We are equally committed to creating more job opportunities that will significantly reduce youth unemployment,” Bawumia stated.

He emphasized the importance of continuing with a party that has demonstrated a strong job creation and economic management record, contrasting this with the previous government’s performance.

“This is why it is better to continue with a party that has created more jobs than any other in the Fourth Republic than go back to a party and a leader who, after four years of dumsor, created more unemployment than any other government in the Fourth Republic,” Bawumia said. “As they say, ‘follow who knows the road.'”
