Majority Leader Alexander Afenyo Markin has stated that the New Patriotic Party (NPP) caucus will not provide the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) with the aggressive platform they seek.
Speaking to the media in Parliament, Afenyo Markin emphasized that the NPP remains committed to lawfulness and will wait for Speaker Alban Bagbin to officially call the house to order.
“There was a decision made by the Speaker regarding Article 97, which led to some members being vacated from their seats,” he explained. Afenyo Markin noted that he had previously informed the Speaker about a pending court case related to the matter. Following a recent Supreme Court ruling that deemed the Speaker’s interpretation as wrongful, Afenyo Markin reiterated that the Parliament will await further decisions from the court.
He expressed disappointment with the NDC’s reaction to the Supreme Court’s ruling, pointing out that they have used inappropriate language towards the court. “We’ve heard the opposition express their disagreement using unprintable words regarding the Supreme Court,” he said.
Afenyo Markin reaffirmed the NPP’s commitment to being a law-abiding party and expressed confidence that the Speaker will make the right decision as the situation unfolds.
