In a bid to immortalize and show appreciation to the late President, Professor John Evans Atta Mills for his commitment to infrastructural development, especially in the areas of health and education, the Chiefs and people of Afram Plains in the Eastern region have resolved to name an ultra modern 150 bed maternity block worth three billion old Ghana cedis after the him.
The maternity block, which was built under the express directive of late Professor Mills when he visited the area, was intended to ease pressure on the only Presbyterian Hospital in the area that serves over 200,000 people in the locality.
Speaking in an exclusive interview with The Al-Hajj, the District Chief Executive for Afram Plains South, Ibrahim Issaka noted that, considering the swift manner in which the late president responded to the distress call of the chiefs of the area when they appealed to the then Minister of Local Government and Rural Deverlopemnt, Samuel OfosuAmpofo for the construction of a hospital, it is more than proper to name the edifice after him.
According to him, over the past thirty years, past governments have paid no or little attention to the health needs of the people in the area, adding, until the construction of the new maternity block by the Mills administration, the Presbyterian hospital was the only health facility that served the district, which prides itself as the biggest in the Eastern region in terms of population.
The DCE explained that, naming the edifice after the late President would be an honor done to a politician whose calm, peace-loving demeanor was a true instance of the commitment he showed to the district, a development he said, will continue to strike a responding chord in the hearts of the Chiefs and people of the district.
Explaining how the district, among the numerous districts in the country caught the eye of the late President to have benefited from such an edifice, Hon Ibrahim Issaka stated that, the Chiefs of the area appealed to the then Local Government Minister, Samuel Ofosu Ampofo to help them get a hospital, especially when the only hospital in the locality was not well equipped and had only one doctor attending to all patients that visit the place for medical care.
?Considering the kind of seriousness attached to the request made by the chiefs, the then Minister informed the late President about it? the swift manner, Professor Mills then directed that an ultra modern martenity block be built in the district,? he added.
This development, Hon Ibrahim Issaka asserted lends credence to the late Presidents? dream of building a Better Ghana for all, irrespective of ones religious or political affiliation.
In his view, the only way the chief and people of the district can say thank you to the late president is to name the new block after him, adding that, the structure will serve as a legacy that will keep the name of Professor Mills ingrained in the minds of not just the people in the district, but people in the region who have seen and appreciate his good works.
