Former UN Secretary-General, Kofi Annan who launched the African Progress Report today Friday 10th May, has stated that, ?Africa is standing on the edge of enormous opportunity and asks whether we will invest our natural resource revenue in people, generating jobs and opportunities for millions in present and future generations? Or will we squander this opportunity, allowing jobless growth and inequality to take root??
According to him, in many countries, for example, natural resource revenues are widening the gap between rich and poor. Although much has been achieved, a decade of highly impressive growth has not brought comparable improvements in health, education and nutrition.
Annan said, ?the Africa Progress Panel is convinced that Africa can better manage its vast natural resource wealth to improve the lives of the region?s people and hope this report will make a contribution for we are all stewards of Africa?s natural resource wealth for future generations.?
