World youth 1,500m champion George Manangoi hopes to strike gold as he steps up to the junior category at the African Championships in Abidjan.

Manangoi, 20, leads a strong Kenyan team, which seeks to unseat Ethiopia, Nigeria and South Africa as the top countries in the track and field on the continental level.

“I’m looking forward to winning gold for Kenya as a junior athlete. The challenge is high, but I have to be at the top of the game so that we can bring home the medals from Abidjan next month,” said Manangoi on Monday in Nairobi.

Manangoi, together with Edna Jebitok and Emmaculate Chepkurui, is among the 45 athletes Kenya has named for the championships.

Confederation of Africa Athletics (CAA) granted Abidjan the chance to host both the Under-18 and Under-20 African Championships concurrently from April 16-20.

The Kenyan team for the Under-18 championships has 24 members while the one for the Under-20 has 21 athletes. Enditem
