A recent report by Afrobarometer underscores both the resilience and vulnerabilities of democracy across Africa, revealing significant shifts in public sentiment towards governance and political institutions.

The inaugural flagship report reveals that despite a strong preference for democratic norms and institutions among Africans, popular support for democracy has declined significantly over the past decade. This decline coincides with weakening opposition to military rule in certain contexts despite a broad rejection of authoritarian alternatives.

Key findings from the report indicate that dissatisfaction with democracy stems primarily from political factors rather than economic hardships. Rising corruption, poor-quality elections, and a perceived lack of accountability among political leaders have eroded public trust in democratic systems. These challenges highlight the need for enhanced integrity in local government and improved accountability mechanisms at all levels.

The report draws from extensive data collected through face-to-face interviews across 39 African countries, representing a significant portion of the continent’s population. It reveals a nuanced picture of democratic attitudes, showing robust support for democratic principles such as free and fair elections, constitutional limits on presidential terms, and parliamentary oversight.

Despite growing calls for governmental accountability and adherence to the rule of law, perceptions of democratic performance have declined in critical areas. This includes diminishing confidence in the judiciary’s independence and parliament’s ability to hold the executive branch accountable.

Furthermore, the report provides individual country scorecards that illustrate specific democratic indicators and trends, offering a comprehensive view of each nation’s democratic landscape.

Afrobarometer, a renowned pan-African survey research network, conducted the study, building on nearly two decades of data collection to inform policymakers and stakeholders about evolving democratic attitudes and governance challenges across the continent.
