Mr Samuel Azumah Yakubu, Builsa South District Director of Agriculture, has admonished agricultural students to acquire entrepreneurial skills in order to fit into the job market after school.

He observed that instead of hoping to be engaged to do white collar jobs, they should learn some entrepreneurial skills and venture into agribusiness.

Mr Azumah stated that agriculture was sometimes perceived to be a course pursued by illiterates and the poor in society, the perception according to him had affected the thinking of graduates of agriculture who could not utilise what they studied at school.

Mr Azumah said this at Fumbisi Senior High Agriculture School in the Builsa South District of the Upper East Region during the unveiling of a programme geared towards raising funds to support the agriculture department of the school.

The Builsa South District Director of agriculture noted that the failure of previous governments to prioritise agriculture made the sector unattractive for the youth to venture into and therefore admonished the students to hook onto government policies, especially on its Planting for Food and Jobs programme to improve their lives.

The Fumbisi SHS was established in 1991 with a student population of 24 and currently has 1,536 student population and running five courses including; Agriculture, General Arts, Home Economics, Business and General Science.

The Headmaster of the school, Francis Adajagsa said the school was well noted for animal husbandry for practical training and large scale farming to augment government’s food supply to the school.

He noted however that due to the annual drought phenomenon, the region experienced, the school could not go into dry season farming because of the lack of sources of water to the farm sites.

“To ensure that there is an all year round agriculture activities in the school, we want to introduce the drip irrigation system. Apart from that we are appealing to government to help us with a new tractor in order to augment government food supply to the school” he appealed.
