Minister of Food and Agriculture Bryan Acheampong, empathizing with the plight of the farmers, has revealed that 435,872 farmers cultivating approximately 871,745 hectares in northern Ghana have been severely impacted by the ongoing dry spell.
The drought has notably affected crops such as maize, rice, groundnut, soybean, sorghum, millet, and yam.
At a press briefing in Accra on Monday, Acheampong reported that the affected farmers had incurred an estimated loss of GH₵3.5 billion in investments, with a potential revenue loss of GH₵10.4 billion.
“As of August 20, these figures highlight the severe financial impact on our agricultural sector due to the dry conditions,” he said.
The Minister also warned of potential long-term effects on food security and the economy if immediate action is not taken.
