Veteran Ghanaian actor Agya Koo stirred controversy when he abruptly halted his performance at a funeral after someone in the audience shouted support for former President John Mahama and the National Democratic Congress (NDC).
In a viral video circulating on social media, Agya Koo, accompanied by a live band, pauses his singing to address the attendee who voices backing for Mahama. Expressing his displeasure, Agya Koo discloses that members of the band include individuals affiliated with the NDC despite his ties to the New Patriotic Party (NPP).
“We are all Ghanaians, and we are tolerant. We have NDC members in our band, and we work together,” he affirmed to the crowd, highlighting the diversity within his musical ensemble.
Agya Koo emphasized unity among Ghanaians regardless of political affiliations, pointing out specific band members who had transitioned from teaching to political organizing within the NPP. He underscored that despite the drummers’ differing political leanings, they collaborated seamlessly in their musical duties.
“Why all the noise and chants?” Agya Koo queried the individual who interrupted the performance, questioning the relevance of political enthusiasm at the event. He emphasized that elections were not imminent and urged mutual respect and unity among Ghanaians.
The incident has sparked debates on social media about the intersection of politics and public performances, especially at cultural events like funerals in Ghanaian society.
