Managing Editor of the Al-Hajj Newspaper, Alhaji Bature Iddrisu, has stated that the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Member of Parliament for Old Tafo, Dr Anthony Akoto Osei?is one of the few legislators of the biggest opposition party whose contributions to national discourse on the management of the economy is less tainted with partisan-political colours.
Whiles patting the former Minister of State at the Finance Ministry in the Kufuor administration on the back for his patriotic views on issues, Alhaji Bature noted that Dr Akoto Osei is one of the NPP MPs he has great respect and admiration for.
Sharing his thought on recent recommendation by the Old Tafo MP that government should reconsider scrapping the Single Spine Salary Structure (SSSS) pay policyto revive the fast dwindling economy on Adom FM?s DwasoNsem morning show, hosted by Captain Smart yesterday, The Al-Hajj?s Managing Editor who is also an astute social commentator said, though he disagree with Dr Akoto Osei?s proposal, he nevertheless, lauded him for his alternate proposal and said it is the surest way to go as a nation.
He said despite the NPP MP?s opposition to the ruling government policies, Dr.Akoto Osei often does not allow his political interest override his knowledge in Finance and Economics, saying ?he always speaks like a nationalist, a technocrat and someone with vast knowledge in Economics than a politician and that shows the love he has for his country.?
At a recently held Daily Graphic/Fedelity Bank Breakfast meeting on the state of Ghana?s economy in Accra, Dr Akoto Osei among other things advocated for the urgent need for government to defer the payment of public sector workers using the SSSS, saying that is the only way to revive Ghana?s economic woes.
He also urged government to commence negotiations for retrenchment in the public sector to cut down the country?s current huge wage bill of about GHC 9 billion.
?The current wage bill is unsustainable. We should defer further payment of the single spine salary and negotiations for retrenchment must begin now,? he stated.
Commenting on the subject, Alhaji Bature after saluting the NPP MP for his courage and patriotic stance recommended the government must rather begin working with labour to increase productivity and slow down annual increment on workers salary.
Alhaji Bature further urge government and particularly, the Finance minister to explore the possibility of improving in revenue collection in the country which he says is very low to ensure that the economy is brought back on track.
Though admitting that Dr Akoto Osei sometimes gets carried away in partisan political diatribe, nonetheless, he said, his contributions on national issues must be emulated by all politicians to enhance the development of the country.
Whiles commending also the Finance Minister, Mr Emmanuel Seth Terkper for starting what he referred to as silent revolution in the restructuring of the Ghanaian economy with the gradual removal of subsidies, the ace social commentator said, government ought to do much and deeper consultation than it is currently doing on the management of the economy.
He said the NDC has a pool of economic brains whose expertise must be tapped for the Mahama government to find its feet and get a much tighter grip on the handling of the economy.
