President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has unequivocally rejected the idea that Ghana was founded by a single individual, instead, he has emphasized the collective efforts of many in the country’s struggle for independence, a testament to the invaluable contributions of each and every Ghanaian.

In his address on Saturday, August 3, marking the 2024 Founders’ Day, President Akufo-Addo addressed controversies surrounding Ghana’s historical narrative, particularly concerning the role of Kwame Nkrumah. These controversies have often revolved around the extent of Nkrumah’s influence and the contributions of other individuals and groups in the struggle for independence.

He acknowledged Nkrumah’s undeniable contributions but went further to stress the importance of recognizing the broader collective effort across generations and various groups, a gesture that acknowledges and appreciates the role of every Ghanaian in shaping the nation’s history.

“I reject completely the notion that one man founded Ghana,” President Akufo-Addo stated. “While Kwame Nkrumah’s leadership was pivotal in our journey to independence, it is crucial to acknowledge the contributions of groups like the British West African Nation Congress and individuals such as Joseph Casely Hayford and Thomas Hutton-Mills.”

He highlighted the role played by organizations like the Aborigines Rights Protection Society and the United Gold Coast Convention, as well as the resilience of the Ghanaian people in achieving freedom.

President Akufo-Addo also addressed the legislative decision 2019 to designate August 4 as Founders’ Day. This decision was made to honour the collective efforts of all those who contributed to Ghana’s independence struggle, not just one individual, while September 21 remains Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Day.

“Kwame Nkrumah’s charismatic leadership marked a significant chapter in our history, warranting his recognition with Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Day,” he added, noting parliamentary acknowledgement of Nkrumah’s historical role despite subsequent challenges such as political opposition and economic difficulties.

The president’s remarks underscored a commitment to inclusivity in Ghana’s historical narrative, reflecting on the complexities and contributions of multiple actors in the nation’s journey to independence.
