President Nana Akufo-Addo has reiterated the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) steadfast dedication to democratic principles, asserting that election rigging is fundamentally at odds with the party’s values.
In his remarks at the 51st Methodist Church Conference in Kumasi on Thursday, August 29, Akufo-Addo addressed criticisms regarding the Electoral Commission (EC). Critics have alleged that the EC may attempt to skew the elections in favour of the ruling party.
The president underscored the NPP’s historical commitment to democratic governance, noting the party’s origins in the Danquah-Busia-Dombo tradition, which opposed one-party rule in Ghana.
“As far as the ruling NPP is concerned, the party is borne from the noble Danquah-Busia-Dombo political tradition which spearheaded the national resistance to authoritarian one-party rule…Rigging is not part of our DNA,” he emphasized.
Akufo-Addo assured Ghanaians that his administration is fully committed to conducting the upcoming elections peacefully and transparently.
He expressed confidence in the security agencies’ ability to maintain order and safeguard the democratic process.
“I am confident that the security agencies will be allowed to bear their responsibilities and will ensure that the free will of the Ghanaian people in their choice for national leadership will be manifest, free of violence and intimidation,” the president stated.
He dismissed concerns about election manipulation, asserting that the will of the Ghanaian people will prevail.
Akufo-Addo also criticized those who have been raising fears about election rigging instead of promoting peace. “The 2024 elections will be conducted peacefully,” he declared.
