We all listened to Nana Akufo-Addo speak today and heard how he cleverly touched on his age vis a vis the job he is seeking to do. He used some world leader dead and alive to justify his determination to lead the nation despite his old age. Mr. Amakye in an interview stated emphatically that Ghanaians will definitely reject Akufo-Addo because of his age citing reasons why he is holding that position. To me I think it is helpful and proper for people to recognize that they have reached the limit of the physical capabilities to avoid complications.

When Pope Benedict announced that he would abdicate the papacy he explained that in today?s world subject to many rapid changes both strength of mind and body are necessary, strength which in the last few months has deteriorated in me to the extent that I have had to recognize my incapacity to adequately fulfill the Ministry entrusted to me By becoming the first pope to resign since the 15th century, Benedict demonstrated a self-knowledge that is incredibly rare among leaders, according the researchers.

Apart from this, it may be a fraught subject that ageing often has enormous effects on peoples personalities and cognitive functions, some leaders can maintain their vitality and abilities into extreme age according to some researchers but they claim that after enough time in office such leaders performance probably will decline, perhaps precipitously.

Frank Lautenberg was forced to stand aside after the oldman described Newark Mayor Cory Booker as a disrespectful child challenging his re-election even though Lautenberg would have been almost 92 when he was sworn in. Research has confirmed that leaders at old age become more impulsive, more Machiavellian and more willing to dehumanize those who lack it, they surround themselves with family and staff and depend on them for continued access to the prerequisite of power so often hide evidence of erratic behavior.

In the impact of illness on world leaders, Bert Park a neurosurgeon makes a powerful case that age related dementia in Paul Hindenburg was key factor enabling Hitler rise to power. All these are evidence we must study and dispassionately assess before rubbishing calls coming from persons like Amakye and others. In Africa especially, political leaders hide their physical challenges just because of power only for their subjects to suffer from their erratic behavior. I honestly think Akufo-Addo should have done the honorable thing of stepping down for the younger generation to take over.

A leaders ability to exhibit physical uprightness in very important in our contemporary politics, his command over his appointees and party, very necessary and to achieve this, leaders must have that physical capabilities needed to make things run smoothly. The way Akufo-Addo spoke, one would get the picture that he appreciate the physical changes people talk have started complaining about, to use ages of past and present leaders isn?t appropriate after all as a liberal democratic know he has issues with Mugabe?s long stay on power so to turn round because of political expediency to use his as yardstick in perpetuating his agenda is just unfortunate.

Whatever it is, I think the younger generation in the party will not see the negative effect of this Akufo-Addo agenda because of unbridled politicking but surely, they will regret it when the man fail them in the next election by which time he would have captured totally the soul of the party into the Akyem enclave.
