Exactly two days to the opposition New Patriotic Party?s crucial April 12 congress in the Northern regional Capital to elect its national officers, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has ?officially? unveil and blessed his preferred candidates to go pass aspiring candidates of his internal rivals.
Having closely monitored events in the biggest opposition party and obviously convinced of a third and possibly final opportunity to lead the party into the 2016 general election, the twice failed presidential candidate, according to a source close to him has lined-up heavyweights contesting for various positions to herald his successful third bid by securing positions in the Tamale congress.
Party insiders disclosed to?The aL-hAJJ?that the former Abuakwa South MP, who recently announced his intension to contest the party?s flag bearership for the third consecutive time when nomination opens later this year, has endorsed outgoing first vice chairman, Mr Fred Oware to replace his onetime choice for National Chairman, Mr Jake Otanka Obetsebi Lamptey.
Former first deputy Speaker of Parliament, Freddy Blay; former Greater Accra Regional Chairman, Sammy Crabbe and outgoing Ashanti Regional Chairman, F. F Anto, are all said to have been made part of Nana Akufo-Addo?s ?army? to secure the positions of first, second and third vice-chairpersons.
As part of strategies to maintain his grip on the party, NPP sources revealed Nana Akufo-Addo has also endorsed incumbent General Secretary, Kwadwo Owusu Afriyie aka Sir John to maintain his post.
The following persons are reported to have earned the former Foreign minister?s confirmation, Hopeson Yaovi Adorye, Madam Tina Mensah and Sammy Awuku to annex the National Organizer, National Women Organizer and National Youth Organizer positions respectively.
Aspiring National NASARA Coordinator, Haruna Maiga and Madam Esther Ofori, sitting Treasurer, are also said to be enjoying the full blessings and support of the twice defeated NPP presidential candidate.
This huge endorsement ahead of congress comes in the wake of recent accusations by former Chief of Staff in the Kufuor administration, Mr Kwadwo Okyere Mpiani that Nana Akufo-Addo was using some regional Chairmen of the party to campaign for aspirants he (Nana Akufo-Addo) feels contented with.
According to the respected former Chief of Staff the regional chairmen were goaded on by Nana Akufo-Addo?s declaration that he would not be comfortable working with some aspirants perceived to be in the camp of former President Kufuor, and as such all effort must be made to stop them from securing their respective positions at congress.
Political watchers say, as the fire-works in the NPP build up ahead of Saturday?s congress, if issues are not handled with care and tact, its fallouts would be difficult to manage.
