One of the locals was beheaded while the other two were shot dead at close range by heavily armed Al-Shabaab members, police said.
According to police, the Al-Shabaab members torched houses in the village and fled into the vast Boni forest during the dawn raid.
The injured were rushed to Mpeketoni sub district-hospital in critical condition .
Inspector General of Police Joseph Boinnet said the attack occurred near Pandaguo area that had witnessed killings during the 2014 Al-Shabaab attacks.
Boinnet said security personnel are currently in the area tracking down the militants.
“They were dressed in military attire and heavily armed. They spoke in Somalia language and shot at locals and beheaded others before escaping on foot,” said senior police officer.
The attack came days after locals complained Al-Shabaab militants had been spotted in Ishakani area, a few kilometers away from the Kenya-Somalia border.
The Al-Shabaab has changed tactics by using IEDs to carry out ambush targeting security agents.
