Somali national troops and Jubbaland forces captured an al-Shabab militant in Lower Juba in southern Somalia, officials said on Thursday.

Abdi Hukun, commander of Somali National Army Unit 43, told journalists that the joint forces conducted a major operation in Bar Sanguni neighborhood, arresting a key militant of al-Shabab.

“Our forces got a tip-off that four al-Shabab extremists were on their way to attack our base in Bar Sanguni, then we intercepted them, capturing one of them named Ibrahim Majenda Mohamed, while others have escaped,” the commander said.

Somali security forces, backed by African Union Mission in Somalia, have stepped up operations against al-Shabab militants.

On Monday, Somali forces killed two militants in an offensive in the southern region of Gedo. Enditem
