The Somali and U.S. forces conducted an airstrike in southern region on Thursday evening, killing an al-Shabab terrorist in the latest onslaught on the insurgents, officials said on Friday.
The Somali ministry of information said the strike, which was conducted in cooperation with the U.S. Africa Command, targeted al-Shabab militants in the vicinity of Qunyo Barrow. “The strike and other battlefield successes demonstrate the determination of the Somali government and its U.S. partners to pursue and defeat those who terrorize the innocent Somalis,” the ministry said in a statement issued in Mogadishu.
The ministry said no civilians were injured or killed as a result of this airstrike. This comes after the al-Qaida allied extremist group, which has lost control of much of the territory it once held in Somalia, still stages high-profile attacks in Mogadishu and elsewhere. “Somali people are united against al-Shabab and their atrocities against innocent civilians,” said the ministry.
