The Movement for Change presidential candidate, Alan Kwadwo Kyerematen, has challenged the claim that Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia is the leading figure in Ghana’s digitalisation efforts.
Kyerematen asserts that his achievements in the field surpass those of Bawumia, widely recognised for advancing Ghana’s digital agenda.
Speaking on “Convo with the Head,” a popular YouTube show hosted by Kwadwo Sheldon, Kyerematen responded to claims from the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and other supporters that Bawumia is the “champion of digitalisation.”
He argued that his contributions are more impactful and practical, while Bawumia is credited with initiatives such as the Ghana Card, Mobile Money Interoperability, Ghana.gov, and the paperless port system.
Kyerematen highlighted his role in developing Trade Africa Online, the first e-commerce platform to support digital trade across Africa.
He emphasised that this platform, part of the Africa Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) project, represents a significant advancement in African trade and was conceived and executed under his leadership.
“This is not a platform that competes with Alibaba or Amazon,” Kyerematen said. “It is an indigenous initiative that supports African trading and stands as the largest project in Africa since the era of Dr. Kwame Nkrumah.”
In addition to Trade Africa Online and AfCFTA, Kyerematen revealed that he has developed a digital platform to mobilise three million youth with various skill levels to capitalise on job opportunities created by his 10-point plan for employment.
Kyerematen urged Ghanaians to critically assess all presidential candidates for the upcoming 2024 elections, suggesting that his digital achievements make him a strong contender.
He also criticised the NPP and the National Democratic Congress (NDC) for their track records, pointing out that both parties had led Ghana to seek assistance from the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and arguing that neither should be considered a viable alternative.
