Alfred Lamptey, a former national Super Featherweight champion, credits boxing with transforming his life after he dropped out of school in fourth grade.

Lamptey’s journey, marked by titles such as the Universal Boxing Organization (UBO) African Featherweight title and the West African Boxing Union (WABU) Featherweight title, is a testament to the transformative power of boxing. He shared his inspiring journey on The Big Fight Night on Omashi TV.

Reflecting on his early years, Lamptey highlighted the pivotal role of his local manager, Alex Ntiamoah-Boakye, and Coach Ebenezer Adjei in guiding his career from adolescence to professional success.

“Boxing became my path forward after leaving school. It gave me purpose, discipline, and a way to achieve my dreams,” Lamptey stated during the interview. He expressed profound gratitude towards his coach for his unwavering support and outlined plans for future challenges in the sport.

At just 22 years old, Lamptey trains at the Black Panthers Gym in James Town and looks up to American boxer Devin Haney as his role model. He fondly recalled winning the Boxer of the Year award at the SWAG Awards in 2022 as a career highlight.

Lamptey singled out Tanzanian boxer Iddi Kayumba as his most formidable opponent, particularly remembering their intense bout that ended in the tenth round. Known by various monikers including ‘Black Spider,’ ‘Bukom Bomber,’ and now ‘ShowTime,’ Lamptey attributed his current nickname to Sheriff Quaye, also known as ‘One Time.’

Addressing challenges in the Ghanaian boxing scene, Lamptey lamented the lack of recognition and support for amateur boxers and urged aspiring athletes to prioritize education alongside rigorous training.

“Education is crucial. It complements boxing and prepares you for life beyond the ring,” Lamptey advised young boxers, emphasizing the need to balance academic pursuits with athletic ambitions.

Lamptey’s journey underscores boxing’s role not only as a sport but also as a transformative force in the lives of young athletes, providing opportunities for personal growth and professional achievement in Ghana and beyond.
